Introduction to the Subject Area

Science studentsScience consists of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Our overall vision in the subject area is for every learner to experience success in Science.

Extra-curricular

We offer a range of revision sessions and ‘clinics’ for students to attend for support to enable them to reach their full potential. We are also hoping to set up a dissection club later this year.

Subject Area Overview of KS3

Students at KS3 have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in all of the three areas of Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Subject Area Overview of KS4

We have many different progression pathways for our students in Science at Cantonian. We are aware that not all learners learn in the same way and have tailored our curriculum to meet the needs of all learners.

Currently, we are offering:

  • AQA Science A (Core Science) - worth one GCSE
  • AQA Additional Science - worth two GCSEs in conjunction with core science
  • Edexcel BTEC Level 2 in Applied Science – worth one or two GCSE equivalents

GCSE Science A

This course is based on three examinations (with a weighing of 25% each) based on the following topics:

  • B1: Keeping Healthy; Nerves and Hormones; The Use and Abuse of Drugs; Interdependence and Adaptation; Energy and Biomass in Food Chains; Waste Materials from Plants; Genetic Variation and its Control; Evolution.
  • C1: The Fundamental Ideas in Chemistry; Limestone Building Materials; Metals and their Uses; Crude Oils and Fuels; Other useful Substances from Crude Oil; Plant Oil and their Uses; Changes in the Earth and its Atmosphere.
  • P1: Heat Transfer; Energy and Efficiency; The Usefulness of Electrical Appliances; Methods we use to Generate Electrical Energy; The use of Waves for Communication.

There will also be a controlled assessment that contributes another 25% to the overall qualification.

GCSE Additional Science

This course is based on 3 examinations (with a weighing of 25% each) based on the following topics:

  • B2: Cells and Simple Cell Transport; Tissues, Organs and Organ Systems; Photosynthesis’ Organisms and their Environment; Proteins – the Functions and Uses; Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration; Cell Division and Inheritance; Speciation.
  • C2: Structure and Bonding; How Structure Influences the Properties’ Atomic Structure, Analysis and Quantitative Chemistry; Rates of Reaction; Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions; Acids, Bases and Salts; Electrolysis.
  • P2: Forces and their Effects; The Kinetic Energy of Objects; Currents in Electrical Circuits; Mains Electricity and Domestic Appliances; Radioactive Substances Decay; Nuclear Fission and Nuclear Fusion.

There will also be a controlled assessment that contributes another 25% to the overall qualification.

BTEC Level 2

This course is assessed based on a portfolio of assignments that are completed to a pass level (C grade equivalent), Merit level (B grade equivalent) or Distinction (A or A* grade equivalent).

The following topics are covered:

Biology

  • 1 - Classification
  • 2 - Investigating an ecosystem
  • 3 - Human activities affecting ecosystems
  • 4 & 5 - Genes and Inheritance
  • 6 - Harmful Substances
  • 7 - Protective Mechanisms

Physics

  • 1 - Energy transformation
  • 2 - Ionising radiation
  • 3 - Waves and communication
  • 4 - Investigating electricity
  • 5 - Investigating the universe

Chemistry

  • 1 - The Periodic Table
  • 2 - Bonding
  • 3 - Investigating exothermic and endothermic reactions
  • 4 - Investigating reaction rates
  • 5 - Organic compounds
  • 6 - Human effects on the environment

Subject Area Overview of KS5

We are currently offering the following courses at KS5 at both As and A2 level:

  • OCR Biology A
  • OCR Physics A
  • OCR Chemistry A

We are also looking to introduce the Edexcel Level 3 in Applied Science (Medical Science) as of September 2013.
